The Union Cabinet has given its approval to the Delhi Metro Phase V expansion project, allocating ₹12,015 crore for strengthening the capital’s mass rapid transit system. The decision marks a significant step towards improving urban mobility, reducing traffic congestion, and promoting environmentally sustainable transport in Delhi.
According to official information, Phase V (also referred to as Phase V-A) will involve the construction of around 16 kilometres of new metro corridors across three strategic routes. The expansion will add 13 new stations to the network, including 10 underground stations and 3 elevated stations, designed to improve connectivity in densely populated and high-traffic areas.
With the completion of this phase, the Delhi Metro network is expected to cross the 400-kilometre mark, further strengthening its position as one of the largest metro rail systems in the world. The new corridors will connect key residential, commercial, and transit hubs, making daily commuting faster and more convenient for lakhs of passengers.
The government has stated that the project aligns with its broader goals of reducing vehicular pollution, cutting travel time, and encouraging the use of public transport. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will implement the project, which is expected to be completed within three to four years, subject to approvals and construction timelines.
The Cabinet’s clearance of Phase V underlines the Centre’s continued focus on expanding urban infrastructure and meeting the growing transportation needs of the national capital.
